Description

NGC1316 ist one of the very large galaxies, located in the constellation Fornax at a distance of (depending on source) 60-75Mio LJ with a diameter of about 255000LJ - about 2x the size of the Milky Way. It is at 1400MHz one of the most intensive radio sources known. North of NGC1316 is NGC1317, a smaller galaxy in gravitational interaction with NGC1317. The size and shape of the main galaxy leads to the conclusion that it might have swallowed some smaller galaxies in the past, long time ago.
